Meet our part-time instructors:
Peggy Berg, who has been on the Industry Board for many years and has guest lectured in a number of classes, brings extensive knowledge in hotel operations, hotel development and ownership to the faculty at Georgia State University. Ms. Berg, the former president of The Highland Group—a hotel consulting firm—brings more than 20 years of industry experience to the classroom. She is a leader in addressing impact issues between franchisers and franchisees and is frequently asked to represent clients as an expert witness in litigation. As a hotel owner and manager, Berg is responsible for re-positioning an award-winning, 121-room Hampton Inn in Atlanta, Ga. A graduate of the School of Hospitality Management at Michigan State University, Berg qualified as a CPA in 1982 and an ISHC in 1989. She received a master of public policy from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2011.
Neville Bhada is principal and CEO of Tourism Skills Group, a destination development and marketing consultancy offering in-depth, specific solutions through research. Bhada was also vice president of communications for the Southeast Tourism Society adding to his sound knowledge of all industry sectors. Bhada earned a B.B.A. in international business from the University of Georgia and an M.S. in parks, recreation and tourism management from Clemson University.
Paul Breslin, CHA, CHE, ISHC
Paul Breslin draws upon more than 25 years in the hotel industry where he has served as the general manager of both the Omni CNN Center and the Sheraton Downtown Hotel in Atlanta. He serves as principal of Horwath HTL, an international consulting firm specializing in hotels, travel and leisure. Breslin has also been recognized as one of the “Most Influential Atlantans” and “Who’s Who in Hospitality” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Kathi Corbett is the director of franchise revenue management initiatives at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. Her responsibilities include strategic and tactical leadership, and the creation and implementation of revenue management initiatives to monetize Starwood’s financial investments in its tools, systems, processes and technology. This is accomplished by leveraging relationships with hotel team members, management company executives, and hotel owners.
Prior to her current position, Kathi worked in various operations, sales and revenue management positions with increasing span of control at the property, area/regional and corporate levels at Starwood (15 years), Le Meridien Hotels (2.5 years – prior to acquisition by Starwood), Summerfield Suites Hotels (2 years – prior to acquisition by Hyatt) and Bristol Hotels & Resorts (2 years). She is noted for her 9 years leading the Starwood Franchise Revenue Management Team, where she implemented a revenue management trainee program, partnered with Dr. Debra Cannon at Georgia State University to begin teaching students about revenue management, and created a pipeline of candidates from students who graduated from the Cecil B. Day School of Hospitality to join the trainee program.
Kathi earned her B.S. from Texas Tech University (restaurant, hotel and institutional management), and her M.B.A. from the University of Georgia.
Fred Elsberry spent more than 38 years in customer service roles with Delta Air Lines. Currently, Fred is president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving metro Atlanta, Athens and Northeast Georgia. Fred is a frequent speaker on consumer and business issues related to an ethical marketplace and is considered an expert in the field of logistics, customer service, and claims. Fred speaks annually at the University of Wisconsin’s Transportation and Claims Prevention seminar.
Evan L. Kaine is a founding partner of Kaine Law, LLC. His civil law practice assists clients with business creation and structure, employment issues, daily business operations, accounts collection, business disputes, and contract issues. Kaine is an alumnus of the School of Hospitality. In 2011, Kaine was named by Atlanta magazine as a “Georgia Rising Star” in its legal edition.
Dr. Mark Newton was director of the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management Program at Gwinnett Technical College. Newton has taught a variety of courses over a span of 20 years at Gwinnett Tech. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration along with his master’s and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Georgia. He is a member of Georgia Meeting Professionals International and Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association – Georgia Chapter.
Patrick Skaggs is senior director of campus operations at the Georgia World Congress Center after seven years as its assistant general manager. Skaggs has more than 24 years’ experience in venue management with other venues such as the Greater Richmond Convention Center and Exhibition Center, Olympia Entertainment and Sun Dome Inc. Skaggs is also very involved with the International Association of Venue Managers holding the position of sector director – convention centers and serving on the executive committee. Skaggs has a master’s degree in sports management from Florida State University.
Anne R. Terrell, CC
Anne R. Terrell serves as chef instructor for the hands-on food production courses at Georgia State University. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Chef Terrell earned the Certified Culinarian distinction from the American Culinary Federation after extensive work at 103 West, The Georgian Club and The Ashford Club. Prior to joining Georgia State University, Chef Terrell served as the teaching instructor at the Viking Culinary Arts Center in Atlanta and Williams-Sonoma at The Avenue at East Cobb.
Michael A. Venezia, MA, CSW
Michael Venezia is the corporate director of education for United Distributors Inc., one of the nation’s largest beverage wholesale companies. With more than 30 years of experience in the beverage industry, his primary responsibility is focused on seminars and tastings, as well as sales- and marketing-related issues. Michael is also the contributing wine editor for Cobb Life Magazine, a publication of the Marietta Daily Journal, and holds an ongoing program for passionate consumers called Boot Camp for Wine Lovers at the Paper Mill Grill in Marietta.
Mike Wien is the founder and senior consultant at Wien & Associates, a hospitality marketing company. As a senior marketing executive, he has developed marketing programs that increase sales and market share for such major organizations as Deloitte & Touche, Cole Taylor Bank, Citibank, Omni Hotels and PepsiCo (Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Group). Mike has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Colorado State University and an MBA from Northwestern University.
